The holy Wiki-bible-pedia says this: ”The law of attraction is the name given to the belief that “like attracts like” and that by focusing on positive or negative thoughts, one can bring about positive or negative results.”
**I apologize in advance for the gross over-use of the word “happy” in this post. I did not do it on accident. It seemed fitting to simplify the ever-complex human emotional system down to one word for the sake of perspective. I intend this post to be one piece of the big puzzle…a suggested great first piece.
I ascribe to this Law of Attraction thing, that is, until everything starts going wrong. And I’m not joking, sometimes it ALL goes wrong! And in that case, how am I supposed to will good things in the midst of bad?! How do you keep a good attitude when it feels like there really isn’t much to have a good attitude about? I think I have discovered that I was interpreting the definition of the law of attraction all backwards-like. Focusing on the positive doesn’t mean there is no negative or that you have to pretend it’s not there. Focusing on the positive is just keeping the happy a little closer than the not-so-happy.
I was having a doozy of a week (week(S)…month…year) and a dear friend reminded me that happiness is a choice. Sometimes hearing how important attitude is can be difficult for me. I believe in the science of thought processes, too; that there is a very physical, chemical reaction we have to stimulus in our environment and that it can’t all be fixed just by not thinking about it! And sometimes, that is true. Sometimes situations need more than that. Sometimes we need to make a change, sometimes we need help from doctors, helpers, healers, medications, friends and family…
But always we have a choice to find the happy, too. It is ALWAYS there, and it’s a really great place to start. I dare you to prove me wrong. Maybe the law of attraction isn’t the whole picture? Could it be that we don’t just ATTRACT things with attitude, we also better SEE the important things when we choose a positive attitude? Maybe it’s simply that by focusing on a positive thing…something that IS actually working…you just notice the rest of those happy things so much more.
It’s only Wednesday, and my week has already been a testament to this idea. Good, happy things are there…all sprinkled in with the sad things that are infinity more bearable if they’re not the only things you see.
